Jack,I just came across this message so I will try to reply now.I use the Hook
and Hackle chart for guide spacing. I use two strippers on 9 foot and longer
rods. The Snake Brand guides need no prep on the guide feet. Though they are
more expensive to me they are worth it. The other two brands need to have the
feet polished and the length on the feet are not symmetrical..I don't mess with
Color Preventive. It can be a mess if not totally saturated in the wraps. The
222 is not available from Gudebrod  is not available. I used to use that for
the final coat on my bamboo rods.Contact me by phone if you have any
questions.Tony

NevilleThis is what I used. It is not water clean up. #222 I think. Don't
believe it is made anymore. On Apr 23, 2015 12:39 PM, "Neville Gosling"

I prefer to omit colour preserver but when tying with a silver or gold thread
inlay, it can be a problem as the wraps becomes translucent one can see the
hidden tags through the wrap.
I would not have used the 1985 varnish. I have an unopened bottle of Gudebrod
rod varnish in front of me as I type, but is the water clean up type and is has
separated in the plastic bottle. I am going to throw it away and instead
recently varnished some wraps with Minwax Helmsman Spar urethane which I like,
although one must build up successive thin coats.
A word of caution, if you use a two part product like Flexcoat, the stuff is
quite toxic and can cause skin irritation. This happened to Dave Lewis and he
had to revert to using spar varnish. Dave died of pancreatic cancer and he
wondered prior to his death whether this contributed to his condition.

Neville,
Fifth rod - I try to keep a beginner's mind - wanting to learn more :)
Didn't use color preserver, I prefer the more translucent look without color
preserver. This rod was purchased at our annual fly fishing club auction last
year. It was originally purchased in the 80's and sat in the closet for 30
years. Also in the box were two bottles of Gudebrod Glass Rod Varnish and I
opened one of these to finish the wraps on this rod. The Varnish had a date
stamped on it of 9-85, but it seemed to go on ok and dry properly.

Looks like very nice job. I thought you said you were a beginner. Did you use
colour preserver on the wraps?

I have a 7wt 2 piece Tiger Eye Blank that I'm thinking about building and am
sorting through some of the different fly rod guides out there.
Has anyone used the Snake Brand Universal guides?   The talk about them seems
to be good, but they are more expensive? Or how about Hook and Hackle guides or
Pac Bay?
I have seen a recommendation to use no more than 2 sizes of guides on a rod and
other recommendations for as many as 5 different sizes on a 9 ft. rod. What do
you think??
And the sizes seem to be different for each brand, for example Snake Brand #1
is 4.44 mm and Hookhack and Pac Bay are 5.1mm.
Is larger or smaller better or just different??
Thanks,Jack - a beginner rod builder :)
