I met Mike when we tied at the Holland Flyfair in ‘98. We hit it off and spent a lot of time together while there in Holland, as he was experienced in Europe do’s and don’t. He was quite the character and had a larger-than-life but rough personality. We became good friends and met up again a few times over the years at fly shows.
He had a great sense of warped humor so he loved the Baits Hotel. We tied at a table together in Denver years ago and he got to relieve me on breaks, doing the Baits Hotel routine (which he had learned over the years) and had a blast with his own showmanship. My Mike Martinek Jr. Streamer Hooks now go into my collector’s box for safe keeping. When I tied my streamers for Darren’s 365 project, Mike was the high mark to shoot for. Will miss him.
