Jack,
These samples of rope-dubbed fly bodies are tied with a mixture of squirrel and
spikey hare’s mask (ears) dubbing.
On the real samples, the segmentation stands out a lot more because of lighting.

Does the pattern call for dubbing this spikey?

It also looks like the tail fibers of twisted pearl mylar flash are basic to
the pattern. (not shown)
Do you have an official pattern recipe to include with the swap info?

Also, do you have the official background story of the crawfish caught on one?
(my intro post)

THANKS!

DonO

Don

I think the spikey squirrel is just the ticket for the pink squirrel . . . .

Tight lines,

  Jack,
Would the proper recipe dubbing be a spikey squirrel?
So where’s Nick R. these days?
Talking about the squirrel reminds me of him.

Hoping to hear from Deb also.

Yep Pink Squirrel is a WI pattern. I think it came out of the Driftless
Angler Fly Shop in Viroqua WI.

    Jack,
Thanks for the story- very interesting.

I’ve got some ‘upgrades’ to the basic pattern for you to try. Lots of
variations in Google images, but no rope-dub grub patterns.

Wisconsin is the ‘home’ for this pattern, isn’t it?

Hi Don . . . Count me in too if we have a couple of months as recently
posted.

Did a trip to Wisconsin to visit my son and go to Kyle Zempel's trout camp.
I was introduced to the Pink Squirrel at that time and landed a few trout with
a tenkara rod. On returning to Indianapolis I ventured to the local pond with
the Pink Squirrel still attached and decided what the heck let's just toss it
in and see what happens. The fly hit the surface and about a foot under the
water a big, really big sinister silver thing flashed on the fly and
immediately broke me off. I have since tried pink squirrel flies several times
on that pond and to my dismay have never gotten a single bite . . . not even
from a bluegill. 😉
