I have had kind of the same experience as Dean. I have
a 9' 7wt rod built on a Loomis blank that I use for
steelheading. The builder used single foot guides and
swears by them, saying they put fewer (or smaller)
"stiff spots" in the rod when casting. I'll take his
word for it, but I think the average caster wouldn't
notice a difference. I have had some of the guides
bend down toward the rod a little, but they're easy to
straighten. Probably several cycles of bending and
straightening would eventually weaken the foot and
break the guide. I've talked with several guys who
build rods and opinion seems to be divided about
evenly between single foot and double foot guides.
Each person has their own very logical and persuasive
reasons for doing it the way they do.
