It is interesting to note that the scuds actually swim with their bodies straight out. 
When you see them curved, they are either at rest or dead. I have observed them in 
Lee's Ferry on the Colorado in quite a few different colors. Usually a pink or orange 
scud is a dead scud. We tie them in tan brown and a real ugly green. Almost the color 
of an inch worm.
When tying them we always add just a small pinch of red to simulate the veins running 
through the body.
These scud's are the main staple of the fish in Lee's Ferry and you must fish them 
heavly weighted to get down on the bottom. If you don't come up with moss on your hook 
each time you are not fishing deep enough. I have fished Lee's Ferry when the water 
was running at over 45,000 c.f.s and you have to weight the hook with some split shot 
as well as a weighted fly.
