James, While spar varnish would work, it is quite slow drying. I suggest you go to your local drugstore and pick up a bottle of Sally Hansen Hard- As-Nails clear nail varnish. Dries clear, hard and fast. You may want to thin it down some for smaller flies or if you desire faster/deeper penetration of the varnish into the thread wraps. Cheers, Hans
