The Rocky Mountain is a good cheap trout reel in size 5. I've got one and
I'm really happy with it. The $15.00 spools are a big selling point because
I have a number of different set-ups I use.

That said, there's a big difference between a 2 pound trout and a 12 pound
steelhead, and it's more than just 10 pounds. If you want to turn around a
steelie, or for that matter, anything big enough to require an 8wt rod, the
Rocky Mountain is going to have trouble. I'm using one for my steelhead
setup because I haven't been able to replace it. It works, but the drag is
catchy when it's under serious pressure, and it just isn't sufficient. The
Tioga just mentioned is a good choice.

Subject: [VFB] Reel Question

> Has anyone out there tried out one of the new Orvis Rocky Mountain LA fly
reels? I want an upgrade reel on my 8wt but i dont want to put 300 dollars
into a LA. It has a cast alum. frame similar to the battenkilland the $15
cartridges that let you carry extra lines/shooting heads/ etc very cheaply.
Since it is orvis it is most likely gjood quality, and at 85 bucks ill be
able to afford to eat after i buy it. According to the description the
frame, and the drag are very similar to the 'kill and I own a battenkill and
am very satisfied. Anyone have any ideas on this?? Thanks, Matt
