When I began building rods, I preferred fewer pieces just because I had to
do fewer double wraps.
My most recent rod was a 3 piece with a guide right in the center of one of
the ferrule wraps. It's my
Sixth rod and it was not problem. HOWEVER, If I ever flew commercial air to
fish, the four piece
Would be a necessity...or so I've heard.

You'll stir up a GREAT debate.  I for one can not tell any difference
between 2-piece, 3-piece and 4-piece rods.  If the rating is right, they
work.
