[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

We've had many, many quotes from the great writers of fly fishing over the two years that I've been posting the Quote for the Day and these have been well received by the VFB and Flyfishing World Lists. However,  I noticed that some of the quotes provided by Rick Zieger while I was in New Mexico and Colorado recently were of the instructional type and were well also well received. So to continue that vein, I thought it would be interesting to provide some instructional quotes taken from McLanes Standard Fishing Encyclopedia and International Angling Guide.  1,057  pages of great fishing information. I don't know how many of you have this publication, but if you can find one used, I highly recommend it.  I'd appreciate your feedback on whether this is something you'd like for me to continue.

" Parabolic Action Fly Rod:  A type of rod which is slower than the tip action due to the flexion being distributed throughout its total length.   The butt of a parabolic rod has a low taper; the tip has two compound tapers.   In casting, the butt section will flex as far down as the angler's hand.   Such a rod can be extremely powerful and better suited to some purposes than the tip - or - progressive action rod. "

P.S. I can vouch for the power of the "parabolic".  I own two, an Ogden Smith 9' bamboo and a Wright & McGill "featherlight" fiberglass.  It took a while to get used to them, but I have found that they'll throw a lot more line than regular rods.  A parabolic will definitely make you a better caster, for it will slow your casting stroke down.  This in itself will improve your casting.
