Subject: Re: [VFB] Bird Dogs
Regarding Brittany Spaniels, my family
kept several Brittanies ( one at at a time ) throughout my life.
They were family pets, and were kept indoors, and also used as gundogs for
two or three days a year. There never seemed enough time to spend with
them to train them correctly, but they had enough innate natural ability
that they were indispensable when we would hunt. They would point,
hold, and retrieve. Dad would trim all their extra hair on their legs
and ears the night before the pheasant hunt, to keep down the burrs.
The most endearing quality they have, (which many breeds of gundogs
have,) is their gentle nature. They are excellent with
children. Perhaps this is not the best scenario for gundog owners
who think that their dogs should not be softened by family living, and
those who feel that way are probably right. I have a son-in-law, and a
daughter-in-law who are so allergic to dogs and cats, that I suspect
we will never have another dog. Good luck. Sorry this was so
long-winded.

There is a book out called Game Dog By Richard
Wolters. It is a great book it tells you what to look for in a puppy and how
to start training. I have a lab who is 6 monthes old and doing great.
I
hope this helps you somewhat.
