Dan,
I don't asume that this was a C&R enthusiast. I cannot imagine that he might
use trebles.
I guess he used bait, that's why he uswed this hook. And he did not know
that trout swallow bait very deep.
As far as I know in most fisheries here in Germany treble hooks are not
allowed. For sure because they are so difficult to remove.
