PAUL,
as always, well stated.... I know that they've done numerous tests & YES Treble (Trouble??) hooks have a higher mortality rate as oppose to single hooks. Also sometimes treble hooks will actually prevent an Angler from getting a good, solid hook up. Something about the three points actually pushing back against the Fish's mouth. Also Treble hooks are alot harder to remove from a fish's mouth....ever watch those Bassmaster dudes removing hooks from the Hawg bass they just landed??? They spend way too much time trying to pry it out the bass's mouth...while they tell you about their technique of choice. Then they "throw" the bass back into the lake!!!?!?!?!!?
I'm not getting down on "Bassmaster" types, they do work just as hard as we flyfishers to promote Catch & release ethics, it's just that they should be alot more careful on the Hook removal & release techniques they "teach" to the viewers.. I do not think that we Flyfi hers are elitists in general, thought you'll run into a fair number of them on Hot Creek, running around with their noses in the air...I dislike that sorta Prima Donna attitude, as it turns off alot of folks, who might be interested in getting into Flyfishing.
As to Powerbait/Crave/Sierra Golden type "Baits".......they are formulated from petroleum by-products & in my book are not Baits, but Lures... Bad smelling ones at that. It keeps lotsa "weekend warriors" happy by catching those Hatchery & Farm raised rainbows...overly easy catching at that. it also helps , in a roundabout sort of fashion, to protect the remaining Native Trout stocks & the Wild trout stocks from being wiped out from over fishing & Over harvesting...If these "twice-a-year" anglers can get a limit or two in 2 days fishing at a Lake they dump these "Salmo Stupidus" into, these folks are not very likely to go fishing in Quality waters .... everyone is Happy..
In the end it is all about Give & Take....
my $0.02 on the matter...
