Yes I do go smaller in clear water and in the
summer time.
I scale my buggers down to 14 and 16. My emergers
to 20 and use 6 to 8X tippets.

That was the answer today, had to go to sz 20
emerger and 7X tippet. Did real
well on the river. Started to go to Crooked Creek
for Brim and Smallies but
things happen. My friend got rear ended on the way
over to my house so he got
here late. I have a meeting tonight and it is my
night for being a casting
instructor. I could not stay late. We decided to
do the river for trout as I am
52' from the water. He would be using the new
bamboo rod I just made for him.
Started out with a sz 14 Dirty Yellow emerger.
Took a cutt on the second cast,
it worked well till I started missing several
takes. Found a broken hook.
Changed over to another dirty yellow emerger but
no takes. Can't figure why.
Sized down to a 20 emerger. Sz 20 scud hook, body
strands of antron yarn. two
silver wire ribs and a peacock head. 7X leader.
Had a ball, took cutts, browns,
bows, and cutt bows. If I could of taken a Brookie
I would of had a Grand Slam.
The rises slowed down and went to a sz 16 olive
bugger. Took some larger trout,
had two that filled the C&R net I use. I broke off
on a good fish, changed over
to a sz 14 Chili Pepper. Kept getting hits but no
hookups. After about a dozen
misses I decided to check the fly. I had gotten
the tippet wrapped around the
bend and was retrieving the fly backwards. Got
that cleared up and on the next
cast I hooked into a 15" rainbow. Took four on the
pepper before quitting for
the day.
Had a great morning, my buddy christened his
bamboo rod with a nice 16" Rainbow
on his third cast. He was using the sz 20 olive
emerger. My other buddy that used my flies on
Sunday brought his own flies but took most trout
on the sz 20 emerger that was given to him.
We had four days of low water and had a chance to
get some fishing in. There was a drowning and they
shut the dam down looking for the victim. I think
they found him this evening so that should be the
last of the low water for a while till they get
the lake down. It is about 40' above normal.
Enough rambling.
