I had a fantastic short day yesterday on the beach. I and a friend ventured down the coast a bit in search of Corbina. Well ok, the day was gear toward catching ANYTHING (yes I would have even taken something already on the stringer). After blind casting for an hour, I happened to start actually looking where I was walking, there in the water almost at my feet was a small school of Corbina ranging from 14” to a lot bigger. There was a trough that they were staying in that ran along the beach in about 1-2 feet of water. I adjusted my leader and added another 8 feet of 10# fluorocarbon for a total of 18”. Both my bud and I started trying to lead these fish as they swam through the trough eating sand crabs as they went along. I tried everything in my box in the next 3 hours; I did finally get a grab with an olive and white/pearl clouser. The was it, 4 hours of fishing and 3 of it fishing to fish that I could see and was casting to. These fish once you get them on the hook, as Dean Endress can attest to, are capable of fantastic reel screaming fights, but not for me that day. Now to tye as many different sand crab imitations as I can …..
