Dave,

Could you see them eating the sand crabs?  Curious as I am heading to saltwater flyfishing I guess in Hawaii.  I have never done it and wonder how you know what they are feeding on.  Is the sand crab a normal diet, etc?

    MIKE,
as I'm certian Dave would tell you about the same thing, CORBINA Feed mainly on Sand Crabs(Mole Crabs), Ghost Shrimp and to a lesser extent bait fish. They follow the rising tides in, to access the Sand Crab beds, which are always found on sandy Beaches at the mid to high tide zones. You can "spot" the beds by looking for the Bubbles left as the waves washes back out; during the incoming surge the Sand Crabs emerge from the sand to extend their "feelers" into the wash to strain out plankton & detritus-which they feed on. The Corbina come in with the rising tides to get at the Sand Crabs. The Troughs Dave mentioned are "Honey Holes" for the Corbina (& Surf Perch, Croakers, Halibuts, Etc.) to get at the Sand Crabs, The surging waves knock the Crabs out of the sand & they are helplessly tumbled around in the troughs....easy pickins for any Surf game fish to get. Often all one has to do is pitch their pattern into the trough as the wave passes over it (The Troughs usually run parallel to the shore & there can be up to 7-8 of them depending on the Beach's slope, thought usually there are 2-3) And allow the fly to be "bounced around in the somewhat deeper trough. Sounds sorta easy but it isn't... And when the Target is the "Ghost of the Surf", the CORBINA....the game is that much harder to get that "Hook Up".....Finally, as Dave stated, I KNOW that Corbina will Smoke line off your reel when you hook up with one...I Finally hooked & landed my first CORBINA last Weds, June 26th.....Hot Dog!!!! Hope This Helps...
