Ok Folk, I've got to confess... yes at least 35 (I stopped counting) trout an hour on the Lamar, Slough creek, buffalo creek and soda butte creek. But not all of the fish were of the 16-21" range. I would say 2/3 were in the range of 9-16" and 1/3 16-21". The only other fly I caught fish on besides the modified airhead was a CDC midge emerger (tied by John Martinez) as a dropper off of a "Mohawk". I then used the airhead as an indicator and all of the fish went for the airhead so I took the dropper fly off. It seemed like 75 percent of the time they liked the fly partially sunk so after you caught a fish or two the fly really performed well. I'll include a photo sequence of the adaptation on my web site later today as well as the only fish photo's I have from the trip... we camped and my batteries were toast after the first two nights, cold. One night we arrived back at camp and our camp neighbor came over to tell us he had been charged by a grizzly 3 times in all. I could tell right away he was visibly shaken and pretty shook up over it. He said that the grizzly had 3 cubs. The rangers said that that was unusual for a griz to have 3 cubs so they closed the area off for an investigation into it. Pretty exciting! He asked if he could hang out and go fishing with us so he, my brother and I went fishing up buffalo creek and had a great time catching trout in the 7-10" range on light gear. Every hole of size had a fish. Tight lines!
