Hi Everyone Been reading all the mail on flat wing flies. Guess I'll add my $0.02 . My first experience with a flat winged fly was a salmon pattern tied by Colonel Esmond Drury called the General Practitioner. ( see Atlantic Salmon Flies by Joseph D. Bates Jr. ) This stye of wing was addapted to other steelhead patterns by some fellow anglers in my area. I've been using this method of winging, for tying spey flies for steelhead, for about 25 years. I use the redish or the gold feathers from a golden pheasant to make the wing on my spey flies. I will use 2 to3 feathers tied in on top of each other to form a flat wing on the pattern. I've also used the rump feathers from a ringneck pheasant. For a different effect I dye the above mentioned feathers various colours. These flies provide a wider profile when viewed from underneath which seems to work well in attracting steelhead.
