Can anybody clarify for me what the real differences are in the function of
a hook with a turned up, turned down or straight eye?

>From my understanding, a down eye is traditional on dry flies, an up eye on salmon flies. I tie on mainly down eyes due to the knot I use to connect to my tippet. On scud and midge patterns though, I like an up eye if possible, it makes tying in fine materials and whipping small flies easier to me.
