I use straight borax for all of mine. I haven't done a deer, but it works for smaller game.

When I was a kid I used tannic acid on rabbit skins and they were nice.  Don't remember if I rubbed them first with salt or borax though.  Been a long time.  My Indian lore buddy has used the brains of a deer to cure it and I think acorns have a use here too.  I've heard of many natural cures and most are from native american skills.  Must work well as they clothed themselves in skins.  Lots of coons roadkilled this week but I'm skittish about rabies and don't need another hat.
