Jack Gartside had an interesting discussion about this in his book "The Soft Hackled Streamer" (www.jackgartside.com I think). In his findings the rate at which one species was caught over the other was due mostly to the the presentation and the color of the fly (all soft hackle streamers in this particular case). The browns preferred yellow and brown flies, fast retreives and would travel greater distances to aggressively take a fly. Rainbows preferred white, gray or olive, slower more natural retreives and were less likely to move a great distance for their meal.
