Well Paul, we can't prove it but he "appears" to guide the fly to the mouth.  The times I've put it on the mouth I see a slight turn on the steelies head and give a gentle lift.  I figure if he is fair caught the fly will be in his mouth which is usually so.  If it is outside the mouth, I'd call it lifting, which is not legal.  We watch this guy pretty close but he seems to be legit.  The other side is that he outfishes anyone I know for trout and they are always caught fair.

    MURF & PAUL,

I wonder about some of those Folks in the Great Lakes/New York Steelheading areas...... First I read a detailed overview of the "Chuck & Duck" Method and it comes off to me as if one is just fishing a Bait Rig on a Flyrod (and I thought that casting fast sinking Shooting heads on a River was not much fun, That method has got to be no fun at all to cast all day). Now  talk about Lifting or putting the fly in the Steelhead's mouth????? what the Hell is that about???

I LOVE to Catch Steelhead on the Fly, I'll work the River sun-up til sun-down trying to get one to take the fly. But I will not try to swim a fly directly into a Steelhead's mouth, Set the Hook, Land the Steelhead &  then say that I caught the Steelhead fair & square. I was taught that flyfishing was all about getting the Fish (whatever species it is I'm after) to think your Feather & fur fraud is the real thing, or it's a treat to eat or a Predator...& having the Fish willingly grab your fly. I was never taught that go to use any & all means to get a fish "hooked"...even if it comes off as a glossy description that basically covers the fact that it is SNAGGING.

I'm not trying to belittle either of you, it just seems that some folks will use the disguise of Flyfishing as an excuse to catch fish at any cost(that guy you mentioned Murf, he isn't really a Flyfisher..he's a Snagger in Flyfisher's clothing). I've Read Murf's posts for about 2 years so i know he is a true Flyfisher, Paul I am sure you are of likewise Character....

Curious Murf & Paul, are these Methods in wide-spread use??? I've never seen West Coast Steelhead Flyfishers using that "fly in Mouth" method.. I hope I never will.... I'm hoping that the Majority of Eastern Steelhead Flyfishers use more " Eithical Methods" to flyfish for the Noble Steelhead. I'm fairly certian they do.....
