Well over here in ireland on certain lakes the fish gorge themselves on snails, this happens when the snails rise to the surface during the summer to mate i think, they are hard caught fish then

I'm no biologist, but I doubt that trout will starve from eating snails.
Or that they would eat anything exclusively in the wild.

There have been a few artilces about snails being a favortite food
of trout.  Usually big fish in lakes.
