Its been a while since I've tied up any Deceivers, but I do recall one thing that I believe might help you. I started taking a bunch of krystal flash that when doubled up will produce the appropriate density for the throat. If you bend that bunch of krystal flash over the tying thread and then use 3 or 4 wraps of thread to put everything in place and distribute it neatly, the throat winds up being held in place very securely and there aren't as many wraps of thread building up a big fat head.

I'm having a problem with the head of the fly. The body seems to look okay but the head comes out really long. It's almost like I'm tying a cockroach (which I guess is a modified deceiver?). I think my problem is tying the bucktailcollar & wing. Maybe I get too much on there and therefore I tie it farther back? I'm trying to tie the bucktailso it doesn't overlap the eye (reducing what I would have to cut out).
