Jimi,
I made a wading staff about 10 years ago which is still going strong and is
a close companion whenever I am fishing unfamiliar water.
Basically, I took a sturdy piece of hickory about as thick as a good walking
cane and about as long as from my armpit to the ground. You can use any
hardwood. you could even use cedar and polish it nicely.
I sanded the staff well and applied a good coat of polyurethane. Then I
bored a small hole through the head (top) end and threaded a leather thong
through it; wrapping it around the staff several times for artistic effect.
Finally, I bought a crutch tip and glued it over the bottom of the staff.
I hook the staff to my wading belt with a snap.
Usually, I just let the thing trail along behind me when I am wading and
don't ned it. Since "most" of my fishing is upstream, it is seldom a
problem.
The two most important things: sturdy and the crutch tip to keep it from
slipping out from under you.
Hope this helps,
Doug
