I may start a revolution here, but here goes!

To me, there ain't a tinker's damn worth of difference in a 5 or 6 wt.  The average fly fisher, and I put myself in that classification), can't tell the difference.  Either will work fine for medium sized trout.

Now for a 7' vs a 7 1/2 footer, you'll find that the longer rod is a little softer.  I use 6', 7' and 7 1/2 footers exclusively.  The 6' for fishing narrow NM streams, the 7' for slightly wider streams, like the Cimarron River, where I need to get a little more line out and the the 7 1/2 footer for streams like the Rio Grande where I'm apt to catch a 20" trout occasionally.

Also is there a lot of difference between a 7 ft and a 7ft 6 inch rod?

Take your shots to inform me.
