Mark, I just realized that the red butt is the same as the red ass.  With one notable exception:  you use copper wire. . .great touch!  Adds a little weight and protects the herl. Thanks for the tip! Doug ----- Original Message ----- From: Mark Wendt To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, December 31, 2002 10:49 AM Subject: Re: [VFB] 2nd Annual FYAO Gunpowder Fishing excursion Joyce,         the green weenie is reeeeeaaaaaalllly simple...  Size 12 - 14 wet fly hook, up to 2x long, olive, green, or chartreuse chenille.  Bead or no bead.  Tie the chenille on at the bend of the hook, with a length of the chenille equal to the hook shank length over hanging the bend.  Wrap the chenille up, tie off, make a nice little head.  Remove fly from vise, get a Bic lighter or some such, and lightly burn the tip of the tail.         Red butt.  size 14 - 20 wet fly hook.  Thread - red.  body - 2 strips of peacock herl, and copper wire.  hackle - teal or partridge.  I usually start my thread near the rear of the hook, make a neat little red tag, or butt.  Tie in copper wire, and herl.  Wrap herl up shank, leave enough room for hackle and head.  Wrap copper wire opposite direction over herl.  This really helps keep herl intact, and offers a little bit of copper flash.  Tie in teal or partridge feather on top of hook, front side up.  Stroke fibers out, and wrap once or twice around the hook, make head, tie off.  When you make the head, sweep the hackle back over the body with your fingers, the wrap the thread just slightly up the base of the hackle to make the hackle fibers lay back over the herl body.  The hackle length should be roughly about the length of the hook shank.          Sorry, don't have any pictures.  One a 'dese days, gotta buy me a digital camera...
