You are right Ginger.  I do not perform a figure eight.   It is 4 wraps in
one direction and 4 wraps in the other.  It definately is the best
approach...

I was taught to really secure dumbell eyes (which we really need to do in 
saltwater flies)
is to make about 4 wraps going in one direction before you switch or cross 
over. ie
don't make full figure 8's right away only a few half 8's.... then the 
other half ....then full eights.
Then go underneath like others have stated.
And yes, Zap a gap (super glue gel)is a good finisher.

I think this is also how they taught me to figure skate but that's another 
story.
