On the contrary...

Atlantic salmon -- which I am certain is the species of salmon that Ashley
is referring to -- can and often do return to their home river more than
once -- as some steelhead will return more than once to spawn.

Personally I'd prefer to release a 20 pound salmon unharmed -- allowing it
to contribute it's genes to the continuation of the species -- these days
the salmon need all the help they can get.
