Graeme, Christian social organizations are not uncommon in the States. 
One of the largest is the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Not a 
religion, an opportunity to assemble with like-minded folks. There are 
also motorcycle clubs of a similiar nature that some of my buddies ride 
with. I wouldn't see Jimi's enthusiasm for wanting to associate with fly 
fishers with the same testament of faith to be terriblly off topic. That
