Having just returned from a family trip to Berlin I'm a little late with this, but I just have to reply, since it's almost a year ago that we had the afterparty to the Sowbug on your back porch. Great memories, both the Sowbug and the visiting we did afterwards...
When I got home from the Sowbug I had a friend, a toolmaker, build me a gear unit consisting of 3 identical gear wheels. The center wheel is powered by a drill, and all 3 wheels have a hook in the center. The left and right hand hooks (which rotate in the same direction) spin both leader ends; if the length is reduced by 10%, both top ends are transferred to the center hook (which rotates in the opposite direction) for the actual furling. The pegs are the normal broom handle type, except for the center peg: that one is replaced by a hook attached to a zinger. When I spin both halves, the increasing tension pulls the hook on the zinger upwards, and the tension of the zinger keeps the leader tight during the furling. It's Skip Shorb who thought that out, and it works like a charm, and it's very fast too - I can do 10 leaders per hour.
I have not used any other leaders since.

He has made a motorized set up and the furl is somewhat different. It is tighter than most. He also has a mini loop on each end that is woven in the leader. The furled leader will make a smoother loop and lay out straight. I am not the best caster but it makes me look like a pro. In the three years I have used the furled leader I really can't remember a wind knot or a tangle. He did originally talk to Claud and made some improvements. You might ask Martin Westbeek about the setup. I think he made one close to it. Martin got to spend some time with Skip on my back porch making leaders after the Sowbug last year. Tony

Does he use freaners board method also? What are the advantages of using furled over monofilament tapered leaders in your opinion tony?

My friend makes them for any weight and size. I made one on my 8' 2 wt and one on my 6' 3 wt Bamboo rods. They work great. Tony [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If anyone makes there own furled leader can you make them for specific applications? Like I would want one for my 3 wt for bluegill bugs, or one for my 3 wt for dry fly or nymph presentation. And of course I would need one for my 5 wt trout rod. If anyone out there that makes them would be willing to trade some flies for some leaders , I make trout, bluegill and bass flies.
