Don, my experience is limited to fresh skinned bucktails and bits and pieces
of fresh skinned deer. I've done it both ways..salted the tail/skin first
and let it dry, or dyed it and then salted it, and frankly, could not see
any difference in the way it turned out. But, have only done deer, have only
done small pieces..6 x10 size and bucktails. I've never used the "official"
tanning stuff you can purchase from White Fox Hide and Fur so don't know how
that works or whether one can dye after having used it. I have done a lot of
leatherworking, and know that we dye tanned cow hides there with no problem
at all, but did use a dye that went on rather like shoe polish to do it.
Sorry not to be of further help. Joyce
