Don if you want to use tanned hide.  I would tan it first.  There is a
good chance that the pickling chemicals would react with the dye.

Don, my experience is limited to fresh skinned bucktails and bits and
pieces
of fresh skinned deer. I've done it both ways..salted the tail/skin

and let it dry, or dyed it and then salted it, and frankly, could not

any difference in the way it turned out. But, have only done deer, have
only
done small pieces..6 x10 size and bucktails. I've never used the
"official"
tanning stuff you can purchase from White Fox Hide and Fur so don't know
how
that works or whether one can dye after having used it. I have done a
lot of
leatherworking, and know that we dye tanned cow hides there with no
problem
at all, but did use a dye that went on rather like shoe polish to do it.
