I had an interesting problem (to me anyway) yesterday. I was fishing in a lake,
recently stocked. It was overcast, and very still, though the water was very opaque
from run-off. I caught three fish, but the way I caught them was strange.

I was fishing with scuds as a trailer behind a floating fly. Retrieving the flies,
strip, strip, strip, I prepared to lift the line off the water and recast. When I
began my backcast, accellerating the line off the water, BAM! I threw the fish out
onto the grass on my back cast. This happened all three times.

No indication of a bite before hand - no tightness on the stripping, no dipping of the
floater, but I literally threw the fish out behind me. My son complained about having
to chase the fish throught the grass. They didn't seem to mind such manhandling, and
swam away briskly when released.

Any comments? Any way to correct this? What's going on?---
