Steve:

You just learned a valuable lesson and didn't even know it. The fish were
trying to tell you something.
When ever you are having a slow day catching, you presentation is off.
More than likely you are using the fly that you believe in. Suddenly no
takers. The first thing most anglers do is to change flies.
Why do that if that fly is your favorite, and you've already caught fish on
that fly.
Your problem is either the depth you are fishing at, or the speed or
presentation of the fly to the fish.
Once you have determined to depth they are feeding at and you still don't
get any strikes, then the next thing you try to determine is the speed of
the retrieve.
Remember you are trying to deceive an animal with the brain the size of your
hook eye. You have to be smarter then them.

are some actual label instructions on consumer goods;

On packaging for Rowenta iron: "Do not iron clothes on body." (But wouldn't
this save even more time?)

Subject: [VFB] Late Hook UP

I had an interesting problem (to me anyway) yesterday. I was fishing in a
lake, recently stocked. It was overcast, and very still, though the water
was very opaque from run-off. I caught three fish, but the way I caught
them was strange.

I was fishing with scuds as a trailer behind a floating fly. Retrieving the
flies, strip, strip, strip, I prepared to lift the line off the water and
recast. When I began my backcast, accellerating the line off the water,
BAM! I threw the fish out onto the grass on my back cast. This happened
all three times.

No indication of a bite before hand - no tightness on the stripping, no
dipping of the floater, but I literally threw the fish out behind me. My
son complained about having to chase the fish throught the grass. They
didn't seem to mind such manhandling, and swam away briskly when released.

Any comments? Any way to correct this? What's going on?---
