Personally, I think there are LOTS of 'new things under the sun. Working at the vise is fun for me due to many reasons, not the least of which is a regular sense of discovery combined with advancement.
Lots of the time even little discoveries feel like invention, which stokes the fires for additional experimentation. When I later come across the fact that Joe Blow did the same thing 20 or 200 years ago, it really doesnt diminish my original pleasure, but offers a sense of connection with somebody else working hard. Surely, major advances in anything result from people making lots of incremental refinements, sharing their knowledge, and building on the past. Having ones name in lights has its advantages but its the regular folks out there tinkering who are having the real fun. For example, while I wouldnt claim that Wayne Luallen, Ken Iwamasa, or Hans van Klinken should now be listed as MAJOR innovators, the stuff they do is simply fantastic by my personal standards, and they have really stimulated me a lot. It's just great to work with someone else's techniques, adapt and blend, evolve and contribute. So let me say thanks to all the folks here on VFB and elsewhere who willingly and generously share their knowledge. Maybe the only person who remembers you is the one you gave a few flies to on the stream. Or maybe that's just the best. MK ===== Mark Klemick ! GoFishGo !
