Can you send me pictures of the Crappie Mickey and
Mickey Brim? I like the Mickey Finn, and these sound like they might be
interesting to learn and tie for a swap!
I found this recipe for the Crappie Mickey
online...
Crappie Mickey
by
Gary Sweet
This derivative of the traditional Mickey Finn was dreamt up by Tom Nixon
for bream and crappie. It is quick to tie, is very durable, and adapts to the
addition of a rattle very easily. I like it for both crappie and bass.
Hook: Mustad Qual. 3665A, size 8
Thread: Use red nylon on the rear tie in, and black on the rest of
the fly.
Body: Use either gold or silver mylar tubbing. Leave some fibers of
tinsel beyond the tie in to act as a short, kinky tail if you wish.
Wing: Use two strands of a three or four strand twisted red yarn. The
length of the yarn strands should extend to the end of the hook. Add a few
strands of red flashabou that are slighly longer than the yarn strands. Add
yellow impala or bucktail to the top and sides along the red yarn (the original
Nixon pattern had the yellow impala spread around the entire hook shank and red
yarn). DO NOT put the hair fibers for the wing on the rattle side of the
shank.
Eyes: Turn the fly over in the vise and attach the dumbbell eye to
the head immediately in front of the rattle. Bind down well, whip finish,
cement, and cover with colored lacquer.
