Tom, I was having the identical problem you were. I had a couple of lightning induced shutdowns which created a ton of temp files. I ran the disc maintenance programs and thought I got everything, but it didn't help. I then went to Explorer and checked for temp (*.tmp), back-up (*.bak), and ~*.* files. Found a ton of them and deleted them. The latter don't show up in normal temp folders or in the maintenance cleaners. They are created by the program in an abnormal shutdown. After deleting them, I defragged, which I had done only 2 weeks ago. There were holes and gaps all over the hard drive, from the looks of the defrag detail page. I then shut down, re-booted, and tried again. It worked- PC seems as fast or faster than it's been in a long time.
Just thought I'd pass this along to you. Check for this next time, and you may have more time to fish or tie. There- now it is a fishing-related post.
