Last year California's population increased by 611, 000 to over 35 million. In fact, the state's annual population growth rate of 1.9 percent is now almost fifty percent higher than Bangladesh's. At this rate, California's population will double in 37 years. As the human population increases, the habitats of other species are destroyed to create room for more housing and roads. California was once home to five million acres of wetlands, but today only 454,000 acres survive-a loss of over 90 percent. Over 95 percent of the old-growth forests have been cut.
