Gorse...

This spiny, oily plant with profuse taxi cab yellow blossoms was imported from Scotland by a man whose wife was homesick and pining for the sight of something from their homeland. Gorse rapidly consumed acres of hillsides. Unfortunately, it is highly flammable.

In 1936, the gorse ignited and burned down the seaside town of Bandon, Oregon. 484 buildings were destroyed and only 16 remained after the fire.
