Rain...how I hate you. It began pouring late monday night with massive thunderstorms. It gave us a break on tuesday long enough to go skeet shooting. Than is began to pour again. The rivers were incredibly high and muddy. Did some trout fishing, with very nice luck...streams rose but the water was still clear. I got 8 trout on tuesday on my fly rod...McGinty wet and a Drowned Ant A La Ed Roden in the bead swap. They work....very well. Had 6 brookies about 4-9 inches, and 2 browns, biggest about 12.
Wendsday we got out on the boats and fished a local resivour. The water was about 6 feet over normal, completly flooded the dock and boat ramp, it wasnt pretty. We fished all the flooded timbers and bottom structure we could find. Saw a few bass but they were in the 3 to 8 inch range, so we didnt cast to them. Fished the weedlines with spinnerbaits, and still nothing. Got skunked, the first time in my 4 years of going there that has EVER happened... It rained again later in the day, but I still snuck away from the cabin to a trout hole and caught 4 trout before a truck spooked them. 2 on a cdc caddis, the other 2 on a size 10 wolly bugger. 2 brookies on the caddis, and a nice 9 inch brookie on the wolly bugger. Took a 10 inch brown on the wolly bugger as well.
Thursday we did some 22 shooting and then some more trout fishing, but a thunderstorm rolled in and we had to run to get back to camp in time. Everyone took a break from everything and got ready for the nights coyote hunt. We went to a field where we spotted 2 nice sized elk. The boys thought they were HUGE, but the bull elk was a spike, we found a 7 by 7 earlier in the week. Saw some deer as well. Set up our caller and once dark hit, we played a Coyote Locator call. We were answered back almost immediatly from 2 seperate Coyotes, which was awesome to hear. Played a cotton tail in distress call and called them in. About 30 minutes after playing the Coyote Locator call, we played it again...No answer. Which was a great sign...Coyotes wont give up their position for anything. The Red light we had moved across a pair of red eyes and I stood up, being the spotlight man. Went over and told the 2 shooters(12 gauge with BB's) to get ready, and I shone the spotlight on a VERY large Coyote, probably 80 pounds, and the shooters unloaded on him. He was about 110 yards away, which was far, but he locked onto us, and wasnt going to get any closer. we threw 5 shots at him, and then he appeared to drop. We searched the site and didnt find any blood or fur, atleast we gave him a scare.
Saw alot of nice buck deer, a few elk, and a small black bear, about 250 pounds. Would have loved to do more smallie fishing, but oh well. I'll be going back there in a week to counsoler another camp.
Del, your furled leader was awesome. I used the thread on the trout streams and I absolutly loved it!! Thanks alot!
