I haven't tried the nails...but I just have this feeling that they would make the fly too top heavy & it would flip upside down & probally sink the beetle as well. I make my Beetle wingcases out of Foam & Black Elk hair(Holds up better then deerhair) & have always had success with them. As to airbrushing the wingcase...Since the Trout will never likely see the wingcase top (unless,as I suspect, the fly will roll over & sink) I would guess for your own enjoyment go ahead & airbrush it....
2 more days til I'm off to the Desolation Wilderness....& a short over nighter to take a shot at....
