I went fishing on Tuesday afternoon, and after two weeks of blanking, I had a great surprise. I caught what was probably the biggest fish I ever caught: a carp that was 25-30 inches long.
I got him up to the dock, which was about 3 feet above the water, and got his head, back to the pec. fins out of the water when the 4X tippet popped. I got a face full of line, and he swam away. It was a thrill.

Given you were three feet above the water with no one to help net the fish, you did the best anybody could have done!
No way anybody on this list would have been able to lift a struggling fish with that much size and bulk 3 feet out of the water with a 4 wt. rod using 4x tippet. The tippet breaking probably saved your fly rod! *g*
