I went fishing on Tuesday afternoon, and after two weeks of blanking, I had a great
surprise. I caught what was probably the biggest fish I ever caught: a carp that was
25-30 inches long.

I was fishing in a big pond in our county seat, right across from the county office
building. I was using a 4 weight with floating line, and a size 14 F-fly. I was
fishing for bluegills basically. This was like a text book event.

The carp jumped out of the water, going from left to right. It came completely out of
the water, and was really big. I guessed where the fish was going, and threw the fly
where I guessed would be about 3 feet from his nose. I guess it was because he
grabbed it imediately.

We wrassled for about 10 or 15 minutes - I had to let him run, but had to keep him out
of the dock pilings and a couple of logs. I guess I didn't tire him out completely.

I got him up to the dock, which was about 3 feet above the water, and got his head,
back to the pec. fins out of the water when the 4X tippet popped. I got a face full
of line, and he swam away. It was a thrill.
