Good lines deserve regular maintenance and will last indefinitely if taken care of. However, once cracking occurs, kiss it good bye.
My lines get a bit of cleaner once in a blue moon and even the ones over 20 years old have no cracks and float fine. I will say that they are stored in a basement closet away from heat and UV rays and I rotate lines. My 3 wt line even has a cut to the inner core but still floats fine. I'll replace it when it affects my fishing. Brands? Cortland, SA, Orvis and who knows about some really old ones.
