The best form of drifting is inner tubing! go in a normal inner tube and big controlling flippers on the feet and a big hat on your head and a flyrod in the hand.......

1) your profile is low so the fish don't spook so easily
2) no splashing form the oars so less fish spooked
3) not so many waes form an inner-tube (in my experience) so even less fish spooked
4) usually, you're drifting with the current in an inner tube so the line is often drifting evenly
5) a durable tube (inner-tractor tube with some heavy covering (canvas or kevlar)) will ounce off any big rocks at even a reasonable speed without any damage to you or the tube, so another safety factor
6) i often tie a bright guide rope (flourescent yellow) around my waist so if i fall out, about thirty feet of rope will uncoil with one end tied around any side of he tube, so i always have a lifeline to a flotation device.
7) no rod holders, but if you are enterprising, some may be attached

however......
1) because it is all round, it might be difficult to aim at a certain spot but a little practice with the flippers will do it.
2) its not solid foam or anything like that so a puncture on a big river isn't the best thing.....(ANY inner tubes must be VERY carefully checked for leakage).
