I'm not the world's greatest caster, but sometimes I can hit it right. This happened last Saturday at Mirror Lake in the Uintas (Utah). It was the calm between several storms and I was standing up to my waist sight fishing for the Albino trout that are stocked there. As they cruise the lake you will suddenly see a few swimming below the surface and it is fun to watch them react to the fly. Anyway, there was a lull in fish and I was out far enough to have a good back cast, so I decided to do some distance casting. Perhaps the entire situation had made me feel mellow, so I wasn't forcing the cast like I tend to do when I am trying to get out to 100 feet or so. At any rate it was amazing how far that line was shooting with what seemed to be little effort. So thinking about how it felt when it felt right, here are some suggestions:

.To keep the rod tip from going back to far, slip the handle underneath a rubber band or the sleeve of your jacket. You won't need to do this forever, but it helps you get the feel of what a correct cast feels like.

Don't overdue your hauls. Lefty says they should only be five or six inches. It is timing that makes it work, not a lot of force.

Make sure of three things at least:

The rod has to be somewhat stiff like a fast action

You MUST stop the rod at the 1 O'clock position on the backcast, other wise those loops will really sag

make sure the hauls are well-timed and really sharp (a hard tug on the line)...

I'm getting more distance and speed, but I'm watching the line in front of me, and it's closed - sometimes to the point of tangling the tippet with the bottom of the loop.
