JOHN,
I think you meant to say "casting out 100 FEET"... I'd love to see someone shoot a line out 300 feet!!!!  If you are new to this Shooting Head stuff in the Surf, might i suggest you look into the various Intergrated Shooting Heads/Running line Combo Lines manufacturered by Rio, S.A. & Airflo... All three companies produce quality Lines that will suite your needs.. These Combo Lines are all the Rage here in the Southern California Surf Cummunity... We Love 'Em!!!! I think you'd find that these Combo Lines are more "user-friendly"... certianly more so if this is your first time at Shooting Lines..
For a 9 wt. I cast from 275 grains to a "Killer" 350 grain size.. the Shooting head section of the Line is from 26 feet to 32 feet in length.
You can certianly construct your own, I have spools with Running Line on them, which i will attach various weights & styles of Shooting heads to. From 150 grain all the way up to Cortland's "LC-13" lead core shooting head (can you say "wear a football helmet & shoulder pads....OUCH!!!).
I personally use that Braided Running line with a Large Loop at the attachment end, makes it easier to just pull the Large loop over the coiled shooting head...quick changes when needed...
as Stated by Wes, with Mono running line you do have to stretch it before you begin fishing, and periodically thru the course of a day on the Water... All Running lines-Braided or Mono- will tangle while you fish them. it's simply the nature of the Beast...

Hope this helps and give us all a report of your adventures at Oyster bay... I'm going after the Sharks again at the Power Plant next Weds.. Something about attempting to do battle with a 4 foot plus Leopard Shark that gets under your skin..... (Don O.. you getting ready for next August???? Party Time with the Grey Smoothhounds & the Leopards!!!!)

       DEAN....
