At the end of the play, Artemis is questioned as to why she allowed her faithful 
servent to be destroyed, and she sort of shrugs it off, saying that gods can't 
interfere when other gods decide to destroy someone, and besides, there was an 
argument going on in heaven at the time.

In the words of King Lear:  "As flies are to wanton boys, are we to the gods.  They 
kill us for their sport."
