Actually, this note is about my lunchtime fishing today. I went out to a local river that has been recently stocked. I've caught a few fish here over the past couple of weeks, and went back to a pool that has been quite productive. This is against an undercut bank and has a good eddy that swirls the water back upstream a fair clip.
As I came up to the pool, I saw a couple of nice fish just below the surface. They both went down. The water was dark and cloudy, so I couldn't tell for sure what was going on. Did they see me as I saw them, or were they still there? I tried about five different flies on that pool. Nymphs and dries and a streamer. Nothing. Then a small moth, cream colored and about 3/4" long landed on the water and got stuck. He fluttered there, and rode the current around the pool, out into the stream, and back up. His fluttering was sending ripples out for about a foot around him. I'm sure the racket he was kicking up, not to mention the clear white view of him, was apparent for a long way to fish. I watched him flutter and ride for about 10 minutes, and nothing took him. I guess this is a pretty good fish finder.
