My great gand dad lived off the land for a few years during and after the civil war.  
He developed some interesting tastes, and my grandma catered to them on thanksgiving:

Opposum.  Catch 'em about 2 weeks in advance, and put 'em in a trash can - feed 'em 
table scraps until doomsday.  Roasted, with the head on, and stuffed with persimmons.

And you didn't get to leave any bits on your plate.  NEVER waste food.

Thanksgiving dinner was a nightmare for me when I was a child, but now I appreciate 
what these things reminded him of, and why he gave thanks for survival each year
